Flies, mosquitoes and other flying insects in Summerstrand

The wind keeps them hidden on blowy days, then still evenings bring them all out at once. We go after the breeding sites, not just the insects in the air.

Mosquito, a flying insect we control in Summerstrand

Flies over the food, fruit flies around the bar, mosquitoes in the bedroom at night: flying insects in Summerstrand are mostly a breeding-site problem. Find where they're breeding and remove it, and the numbers fall. Spray the air and they're back by tomorrow. That's how we approach every flying insect job.

The wind decides where they gather

Summerstrand catches the full wind off the sea, and on a blowy day you'll see very few flies or mosquitoes out in the open. That doesn't mean they've gone. They shelter in courtyards, behind walls, on the protected side of buildings, inside enclosed patios and under covered terraces. Unfortunately those sheltered spots are also exactly where people sit and eat. On still, warm evenings, they come out everywhere at once.

So when we look at a flying insect problem here, we look first at where the air is still, because that's where they rest, and then at where they breed.

Restaurants, hotels and takeaways

The beachfront's hospitality businesses get the most flying insect trouble, and the reasons are predictable:

  • Houseflies breed in bins, food waste and anywhere organic rubbish sits in the warmth. A bin area that's washed down regularly makes a big difference.
  • Fruit flies breed in the film inside drains, in empty bottles waiting for collection and in forgotten fruit. Bars and kitchens with floor drains are classic spots.
  • Drain flies, small and fuzzy, come from the slime inside drains and grease traps that aren't cleaned often enough.

For these businesses we usually set up a scheduled service: treating breeding sites and resting surfaces, checking drains and bin areas, and advising on the cleaning routines that break the cycle. Each visit is recorded.

At home: mosquitoes and the odd surprise

In houses and flats, mosquitoes are the main complaint. They breed in tiny amounts of standing water: saucers under pot plants, blocked gutters, buckets left out, pool covers holding rainwater, even the drip trays of air conditioners. Garden ponds without fish can be a source too. Get rid of the water and you cut the numbers at home far more than any spray could.

Moths and other night flyers crowd around outside lights, especially on lit balconies in beachfront flats. They're mostly harmless, but they bring spiders and geckos after them, so switching off lights that don't need to be on helps on both counts.

Wasps are flying insects too, but the nest changes everything about how they're handled. See wasp nest removal in Summerstrand for that. If your real issue is bites rather than buzzing, look at what might be biting you in Summerstrand, since the culprit may not be a mosquito at all.

Our process

  1. We identify the insect, because a fruit fly and a drain fly need different fixes.
  2. We find the breeding source: drains, bins, standing water, food waste or something dead in a roof void.
  3. We treat breeding sites and the surfaces where the insects rest, using odourless, non-staining residual products.
  4. We give you a short list of changes, from drain cleaning to bin routines, that keep numbers down.

You don't have to leave for a normal treatment. Keep pets and children off treated surfaces until they're dry.

A common mistake

Pouring bleach down a drain to kill fruit flies or drain flies. It runs straight past the slime layer where the larvae live and does very little to them. A stiff drain brush and a biological drain cleaner, used regularly, work far better.

A sudden swarm of big flies

If large, slow bluebottles suddenly appear inside the house, check the roof space and wall cavities. A rat or bird that died in the roof will keep breeding flies until it's found. Treating the flies won't help until the source is removed.

Outdoor seating and terraces

For cafés and restaurants with tables outside, flies tend to follow the food from the kitchen to the table. Clearing plates and wiping tables promptly, keeping the bin station away from seating and closing kitchen doors that open onto the terrace all reduce the numbers guests notice. We look at the whole route, from the bin yard to the table, when we plan a programme.

What does it cost?

For a home with a mosquito or fly problem, much of the fix may be things you can do yourself, and we'll tell you honestly if that's the case. For restaurants, hotels and guesthouses, the cost depends on the size of the premises, how many drains and bin areas there are and how often visits are needed. We quote after seeing the place.

Questions we get asked

Why do fruit flies keep coming back after I throw out the fruit?

Because they're probably breeding in a drain, a bin or empty bottles as well. Until that source is cleaned out, new ones keep hatching.

Do you do fly control for restaurants?

Yes. We set up scheduled visits for restaurants, takeaways and hotels, covering drains, bin areas and resting surfaces, with records kept.

Doesn't the wind keep mosquitoes away in Summerstrand?

Only on windy days, and only in exposed spots. They shelter out of the wind and come out on still evenings, so standing water around the house still matters.

Where do mosquitoes come from in a flat with no garden?

Usually from pot plant saucers, air conditioner drip trays, blocked gutters or standing water on a balcony or flat roof nearby.

Are your fly treatments safe in a kitchen?

Yes. We treat breeding sites and resting surfaces away from food preparation areas, and tell you what to cover or put away before we start.
