Most people phone a pest controller because of one thing they saw: a rat on the wall, a cockroach in the kettle, a trail of ants up the cupboard. Our job is to work out what that one thing is telling us. Pests are in a building because something there suits them, whether it's a gap, a food source, a damp corner or a warm roof. Fix that, treat the pests already inside, and the problem stays fixed. That's how Pest Arrest has worked in Port Elizabeth for 25 years.
Why pests do so well in the Bay
Gqeberha has no real winter shutdown for insects or rodents. There's no hard frost, the air off Algoa Bay keeps things humid, and the temperature rarely drops far enough to slow breeding. Inland towns get a break in the cold months; we mostly don't.
Then there's the wind. A few years of hard gusts lifts roof tiles, loosens ridge capping and peels back the edges of roof sheeting. Each of those gaps is an invitation to rats, mice and nesting birds, and birds bring mites with them. A lot of the roof problems we find started with a storm nobody thought twice about.
The city itself adds the rest: old suburbs with big trees and wooden floors, blocks of flats with shared plumbing, a busy harbour, and a large automotive and manufacturing sector with warehouses, canteens and loading bays. Each kind of building has its own typical pests.
The pests we deal with most
Rats and mice
Roof rats in leafy suburbs, Norway rats around drains, bins and industrial yards, and house mice in kitchens, offices and storerooms. Rodents are the most common reason businesses call us. See our page on rodent control for homes and businesses in PE for the full picture.
Cockroaches
German cockroaches breed indoors in kitchens, flats and restaurants. The bigger American cockroaches come up from drains and sewers. They need different treatments, which is why we always identify first. More detail is on our cockroach treatment page.
Ants, fishmoths, spiders and other insects
Ants trail in after rain, fishmoths chew through stored paper and clothes in humid cupboards, and spiders and scorpions shelter in gardens and outbuildings. Our insect control across Port Elizabeth page explains how we sort crawling, flying and biting insects.
Bed bugs, fleas and bird mites
The ones that bite. People often confuse them with each other, and the treatment for one won't fix the others. Getting the identification right is half the job.
Wasps
Paper wasp nests under eaves, in garden sheds and behind gutters, usually found when someone gets stung. We treat the nest directly.
What happens when we visit
We start with an inspection, every time. For a house that means the roof space if we can get in, the kitchen, bathrooms, garage and garden. For a business it includes storerooms, waste areas, loading doors and anywhere food is handled. We're looking for entry points, harbourage, food and moisture.
Then we treat what we've found, with the method that suits the pest. That could be lockable bait stations and traps for rodents, gel baits for cockroaches, ant baits that workers carry back to the nest, or an odourless, non-staining residual spray along skirtings and the outside of the building. Where it's needed, we come back for a follow-up visit to check the result.
Finally, we tell you plainly what needs changing so the pests don't return. Sometimes that's a branch to cut back or a pipe gap to seal; sometimes it's how the bins are stored.
Homes, businesses and industrial sites
For homes, most jobs are once-off treatments with a follow-up where the pest calls for it. For normal insect treatments you don't need to move out; keep children and pets off treated surfaces until they're dry.
Businesses are different. Restaurants, food producers, warehouses and factories need pests kept out continuously, not just cleared once. We set up scheduled monitoring contracts with bait stations, regular inspections and records of every visit, which matters when you're audited.
Where a load, a container or a sealed structure needs it, we also carry out fumigation with registered fumigants. That's the one treatment where the sealed area has to be empty until it's cleared as safe.
Where we work
We cover all of Nelson Mandela Bay, from the beachfront suburbs to the northern areas, plus Kariega, Despatch, the Kouga coast and the Sundays River Valley. Each area has its own character: the mature gardens of pest control in Walmer look very different from the factories and hotter, drier conditions we work in for Kariega pest control.
The mistake we see most
Spraying a store-bought insecticide on the bugs you can see. It kills those few, but it also scatters a cockroach colony deeper into the walls, or splits an ant nest into several new ones. With cockroaches and ants, a bait that gets carried back to the colony does far more than a spray on the trail.
What does pest control cost?
It depends on what the pest is, how established it is, and the size and type of property. A small flat with a few cockroaches is a quick job. A double-storey with rats in the roof and a gap under every tile takes longer. A food factory needs a contract rather than a call-out. We'll ask a few questions on the phone, and once we've seen the place we can give you a proper quote. For some minor problems we'll tell you honestly that a bit of cleaning or sealing on your side is enough.

Questions we get asked
Do I need to leave the house when you treat?
No, not for normal insect treatments. Keep children and pets off treated surfaces until they're dry. Only gas fumigation needs the sealed area empty until it's cleared.
Which areas of Port Elizabeth do you cover?
All of Nelson Mandela Bay, plus Kariega, Despatch, Jeffreys Bay, St Francis and the Sundays River Valley towns of Addo and Kirkwood.
Why do pests seem active all year in PE?
Because our coastal climate is mild and humid with no hard frost. Rodents and many insects keep breeding through winter here, where inland they would slow right down.
Can you set up regular pest control for my business?
Yes. We run scheduled monitoring contracts for restaurants, shops, warehouses and factories, with bait stations, regular inspections and a record of each visit.
I'm not sure what pest I have. Can you tell from a photo?
Often, yes. WhatsApp us a clear photo of the insect, droppings or damage and we'll tell you what it is and whether it needs treatment.
How long have you been doing pest control?
Pest Arrest has been in business for 25 years, working in homes, businesses and industrial sites across the Bay.
