Bed bug, treated by our bed bug control in Jeffreys Bay

Bed bugs can be cleared, but not with a can of spray and a hot wash. They hide in the seams, joints and screw holes of beds and furniture, their eggs are resistant to most household products, and they can go a long time without feeding. A proper treatment means finding every hiding spot in the affected rooms, treating them thoroughly and coming back to catch the ones that hatch afterwards. If you run accommodation in Jeffreys Bay, it also means doing it quickly and quietly.

Why J-Bay sees bed bugs

Bed bugs have nothing to do with how clean a place is. They spread by hitching a ride in bags, clothing and bedding, and Jeffreys Bay welcomes travellers all year: surfers following the swell, backpackers on the coastal route, families on holiday and visitors from overseas. Guesthouses, backpackers, self-catering flats and short-term holiday lets all have a high turnover of beds and bags. One guest who stayed somewhere infested on the way here can leave a few bugs behind, and from there they spread along housekeeping routes, through linen and into neighbouring rooms.

Private homes get them too, usually after a trip, from second-hand furniture or after hosting visitors.

How to recognise bed bugs

  • Itchy bites in lines or small groups, usually on the arms, neck, shoulders and back, noticed in the morning
  • Tiny black or rust-coloured spots on mattress seams, sheets, the headboard or the wall behind it
  • Small blood smears on pillowcases
  • Pale, empty skins shed as the bugs grow
  • Flat, oval, brown insects about the size of an apple seed, hiding in seams and cracks
  • In heavy cases, a sweetish musty smell in the room

Our treatment

  1. Room-by-room inspection. We check mattresses, bases, headboards, bedside tables, curtain hems, skirting boards, plug points and luggage racks, and nearby rooms too.
  2. Preparation list. We tell you exactly what to do before we arrive: which linen to bag and hot-wash, what to clear from under beds and what can stay.
  3. Targeted treatment. We apply suitable residual products to the seams, joints, cracks and voids where bed bugs live, working through each piece of furniture and the room around it.
  4. Follow-up visit. Eggs that survive the first treatment hatch within a couple of weeks, so a second treatment is part of a proper job, not an extra.

You do not need to move out for this. Keep children and pets out of treated rooms until surfaces are dry, and we will tell you when the room can be used again.

For guesthouses, backpackers and holiday lets

The moment a guest reports bites, take that room out of use until it has been inspected. Do not move the guest into the next room without bagging their belongings first, or you may simply move the bugs. Housekeeping should strip the linen straight into a sealed bag rather than carrying it down the passage. We can plan treatment around changeovers and keep the visit low-key. If you have several rooms, it is worth having the ones on either side checked too, because bed bugs walk along skirting boards and through gaps around pipes.

A local tip

Put a hard luggage rack in every guest room and ask staff to keep suitcases off beds and upholstered chairs. A metal or plastic rack set away from the wall gives bed bugs nowhere to hide, and it is the simplest thing a J-Bay guesthouse can do to keep new arrivals from settling in.

Mistakes that make things worse

Throwing out the mattress and buying a new one. If the base, headboard and room are not treated, the new mattress is infested within weeks, and dragging the old one through the house spreads bugs along the way. Bug bombs are just as bad: the fog does not reach into seams and joints and tends to drive bed bugs into neighbouring rooms.

What does bed bug treatment cost?

The cost depends on how many rooms are affected, how heavy the infestation is and how much furniture each room has. A single bedroom in a private home is the smallest job. A guesthouse or backpackers with several rooms involved will take longer and needs the follow-up. This is one pest where DIY rarely works, but we can still tell you after the inspection how much really needs doing.

Questions we get asked

Do bed bugs mean my guesthouse is dirty?

No. Bed bugs are carried in on luggage and clothing and turn up in very clean places. What matters is spotting them early and treating properly.

Can a room be used straight after treatment?

Usually once the treated surfaces are dry. We will tell you when, and plan around your bookings where we can.

Why do you need to come back a second time?

Bed bug eggs are hard to kill. The follow-up treats the young that hatch after the first visit, before they can breed.

Should I wash everything in the room?

Wash bedding, curtains and clothing from the affected room on the hottest setting the fabric allows, then tumble dry on high. Bag it before carrying it through the house.

Can I bring bed bugs home from a holiday?

Yes. Keep your suitcase off the bed while travelling, check it when you get home and wash clothes from the trip straight away.
