If you arrive at your Aston Bay house after a few months away and find droppings in the kitchen drawers, a wasp nest under the eaves or fishmoths in the linen cupboard, you're not unlucky. It's what happens when a house stands empty. The best fix is a treatment before you arrive, followed by a few simple steps when you lock up again.
A village of part-time homes
Aston Bay is a small coastal village near Jeffreys Bay. Some houses are lived in all year by families and retirees; many others are holiday homes that are busy over December and Easter and quiet the rest of the time. Around the village there's dune vegetation and coastal bush, which holds plenty of insects and rodents of its own.
When a house is occupied, the daily noise, light and cleaning keep most pests at bay. Close the curtains and lock the door for three months, and the place becomes very attractive.
What moves in while you're away
Mice
Mice need only a tiny gap to get in, and an empty house offers shelter, nesting material and often forgotten food. They nest in drawers, behind stoves, in mattresses stored in spare rooms and inside the roof. When you come back you'll find droppings, shredded paper or fabric and sometimes chewed wiring. Lockable bait stations outside and traps inside clear them; proofing the gaps stops a repeat. See our mouse control in Jeffreys Bay page for how we track them down.
Cockroaches
German cockroaches survive happily on crumbs in an unused kitchen, and American cockroaches come up through drains that dry out when nobody runs water. That's why a holiday home can have more cockroaches at the start of a visit than the end. Gel baits and a drain treatment deal with both.
Fishmoths
Fishmoths love dark, still, slightly humid cupboards, which is exactly what a closed-up coastal house has. They eat starch and glue, so linen, books, wallpaper and cardboard boxes all suffer. A targeted crack-and-crevice treatment in cupboards, plus better airflow, sorts them out. Read more about fishmoth treatment across the Bay.
Wasps
With no one around to disturb them, paper wasps happily build under eaves, inside meter boxes and around outdoor light fittings. You discover them when you open the shutters. We treat the nest directly and remove it once the wasps are dead. Our wasp nest removal around Jeffreys Bay page has more.
The pre-arrival treatment
For holiday homeowners, the most useful thing we do is a visit shortly before you arrive. It typically covers:
- Checking for rodent activity and setting stations if needed
- Gel baiting the kitchen and treating the drains
- Treating cupboards and dark storage areas for fishmoths
- Checking eaves, shutters and outside fittings for wasp nests
- A note of anything that needs fixing, such as a gap under the garage door
If you use a caretaker or rental agent, we can arrange access through them. Normal treatments don't need anyone to move out, and surfaces are dry well before guests arrive.
The common mistake
Leaving food in the house between visits. A packet of rice, a box of cereal or a tin of rusks in the pantry may seem harmless, but it's enough to keep mice and cockroaches going for months. Take dry food home, or store what stays in sealed glass or hard plastic containers.
A tip for when you lock up
Before you leave, pour a jug of water into each drain and put the plugs in the basins and baths. Dry drain traps let smells and cockroaches straight up into the house. Plugs and full traps keep that route closed until you're back.
And for year-round residents
If you live in Aston Bay all year, the picture is closer to a normal coastal home: ants coming in from the sandy garden, spiders on the walls and the occasional mouse in winter. A seasonal treatment usually handles all of that, and because someone is home every day, problems tend to be spotted early, while they are still small and quick to treat.
What does it cost?
The price depends on the size of the house, which pests have moved in and how established they are. A pre-arrival check on a home that's been well closed up is a short visit. A house where mice have been nesting for months needs stations, traps, proofing advice and a follow-up. We'll quote once we know what we're facing.

Questions we get asked
Can you treat my holiday house while I'm not there?
Yes. We can arrange access through a caretaker, neighbour or rental agent, and send you a note of what we found and treated.
When should I book a pre-season treatment?
A week or two before you or your guests arrive works well. That gives baits time to work and any follow-up time to happen before the house fills up.
Why are there more cockroaches when the house has been empty?
Drains dry out when no one uses them, which lets cockroaches climb in, and nobody is around to disturb them. Running water through the drains and treating them helps.
Will mice damage my house while I'm away?
They can. Mice chew wiring, insulation, linen and stored mattresses. Sealing entry points and having stations in place before you leave reduces the risk.
Is the treatment safe before guests arrive?
Yes. Sprays are odourless and dry within a few hours, and gel baits sit in cracks out of reach. Once surfaces are dry the house can be used normally.
