Who's biting you? Biting insect control in Kariega

Itchy bites with no obvious culprit are one of the most frustrating calls we get. The first job is working out what's biting, because each one is treated differently.

Bites from biting insects in Kariega (Uitenhage)

If you're getting bitten at home or at work in Kariega and can't see what's doing it, don't start spraying yet. Fleas, bed bugs, bird mites and mosquitoes all leave itchy red bites, but they live in completely different places. A treatment aimed at the wrong one wastes money and lets the real problem grow. So we start with a few questions and a careful look, and only then decide how to treat.

Reading the bites

Where and when you're bitten narrows things down quickly:

  • Ankles and lower legs, often while standing or sitting on the floor: almost always fleas, usually linked to a dog or cat, or to a yard where pets lie.
  • Rows or clusters on the arms, neck and back, noticed in the morning: a strong pointer to bed bugs feeding at night.
  • Bites all over, with tiny moving specks on walls, ceilings or bedding: often bird mites, coming down from a nest in the roof or gutter.
  • Single bites on exposed skin in the evening, with a whine in the ear: mosquitoes.

It's not foolproof, people react differently to bites, but it tells us where to look first.

What makes Kariega different

Dogs are part of most Kariega households, and in the hot months dogs spend their days in shaded, dusty spots under stoeps, carports and trees. Those are exactly where flea larvae develop, safe from the sun. When the dog comes back inside, so do the fleas. Our page on clearing fleas from Kariega homes and yards covers that in detail.

The town's large workforce also moves around a lot: contractors, people renting rooms near the factories, second-hand beds and couches changing hands. That's how bed bugs spread from one place to the next. More on that in our page about bed bugs in Kariega.

Then there are birds. Pigeons and other birds nest in factory roof spaces, on warehouse beams and under the eaves of older houses. When the chicks leave, mites left in the nest go looking for a new host and find people. See bird mite treatment in Kariega if that sounds familiar.

How we treat biting insects

Fleas

We treat the inside of the house and the outdoor resting spots together, with a residual product that also targets the larvae. Your vet treats the pets on the same day. If the animals aren't treated, the house is re-infested within weeks.

Bed bugs

We inspect mattresses, bed bases, headboards, couches and the cracks around them, then treat thoroughly with a follow-up visit, because eggs hatch after the first treatment. You'll get a preparation list before we arrive.

Bird mites

We find and treat the nest, remove it where it's safe to do so, and treat the areas where mites have spread. Blocking the bird's way back in stops a repeat.

Mosquitoes

We look for and remove breeding water around the property and treat the shady places where adult mosquitoes rest during the day.

None of these treatments means moving out for the day. Once the product has dried on floors, bedding areas and paving, children and pets can use those spaces again.

Biting insects at work

We regularly get calls from offices and factory floors where several staff members start reporting bites at once. It's usually bird mites from a nest above a ceiling or in a roof void, or fleas carried in on clothing and spreading through carpeted offices. We inspect the building, find the source and treat after hours if needed.

A local tip

If your dog sleeps under the stoep or in a dusty corner of the yard, rake that spot and let the sun reach it, or lay a mat that you can wash. Flea larvae can't survive hot, dry, exposed ground, and in a Kariega summer the sun does a lot of the work for you.

The mistake we see most

Buying a bug bomb for bites. If it's bed bugs, the bomb won't reach them in the mattress seams and can spread them to other rooms. If it's bird mites, the source is still in the roof. If it's fleas, the larvae under the couch are untouched. Identify first, then treat.

What does it cost?

It depends on what's biting and how far it has spread. Fleas in a house and yard are a fairly standard job. Bed bugs take longer and need at least one follow-up. Bird mites depend on how easy the nest is to reach, especially in a factory roof. Mosquitoes are often mostly solved by removing standing water, which you can do yourself. We'll quote once we know what we're dealing with.

Questions we get asked

How can I tell flea bites from bed bug bites?

Flea bites are mostly on the ankles and lower legs. Bed bug bites tend to be in rows or clusters on the upper body and appear overnight.

Can bird mites live on people?

No. They bite people but can't breed on us. Once the nest is treated and removed, they die off within a few weeks.

Do I need to treat my pets as well as the house?

Yes, for fleas. Pets should be treated by your vet on the same day we treat the house and yard.

Will a once-off treatment get rid of bed bugs?

Usually not. Eggs hatch after the first treatment, so a follow-up visit is a normal part of bed bug control.

Why do I get bitten at work but not at home?

It may be bird mites from nests in the factory roof, or fleas brought in on clothing. An inspection of the workplace will usually find the source.

Can you treat a rented room or flat?

Yes. For bed bugs, it often helps to treat neighbouring rooms too, so speak to your landlord about it.
