Pest control on Sardinia Bay's big plots

Dunes, bush and a lot of ground between you and the nearest neighbour. On a Sardinia Bay property, pest control is about protecting the house from everything around it.

Pest control treatment in Sardinia Bay

On a large Sardinia Bay plot, you'll never get rid of every scorpion, spider or field mouse on the property, and you shouldn't try. The land around you is dunes and coastal bush, full of wildlife. What you can do is make the house and the buildings you use every day hard to get into and unattractive to live in. That's where we focus.

Why big plots need a different approach

Sardinia Bay is a rural stretch of coast with dunes, bush and big properties, rather than a suburb of houses in rows. In a suburb, the pests are mostly coming from next door. Out here, they're coming from every direction, from ground that isn't going to be treated. So instead of trying to treat the whole plot, we build a defence around the house: a treated perimeter, sealed entry points, controlled rodent stations and a clear zone between bush and walls.

Outbuildings matter too. Garages, workshops, staff cottages, pump houses and storerooms are where pests build up before they reach the main house.

The four we deal with most

Scorpions

Sandy ground, stone, wood piles and bush are scorpion country. During the day they shelter under rocks, logs, bricks and debris; at night they hunt, and some find their way under doors and into shoes, towels and bedding. Most local scorpions give a painful sting rather than a dangerous one. The ones to treat with more caution have thick tails and small, slender pincers. A barrier treatment around the house, door seals that close the gap at the threshold and clearing hiding places near the walls all reduce how many get in. Our scorpion control on the western side of the city explains the approach in more depth.

Spiders

Bush on every side means a steady supply of spiders. Rain spiders and garden orb weavers are mostly a nuisance. Button spiders, with their shiny black or brown bodies, prefer sheltered, undisturbed spots in outbuildings, under outdoor furniture and in stacked materials, and need more respect. We treat outside walls, eaves, garages and outbuildings, and point out where they're sheltering. See spider treatment around Walmer and Sardinia Bay.

Rodents in outbuildings

Field mice and rats move from the bush into garages, workshops and storerooms, especially where there's animal feed, bird seed, compost or stored furniture. From there, the next step is the roof of the house. We set up lockable, tamper-resistant bait stations around the outbuildings and the house so the bait stays away from dogs, wildlife and birds of prey. More on that on our rodent control service page.

Ants in sandy soil

Dune sand is easy digging, and ant nests can be large and spread out. They trail into kitchens and pantries, especially after rain. Baits taken back to the colony are the effective answer.

Signs to watch for

  • Scorpions in the bathroom, in shoes or near doors at night
  • Droppings and gnawing in the garage or workshop
  • Heavy webbing around outside lights and in outbuildings
  • Ant trails along the foundations or into the kitchen
  • Scratching in the roof once the weather cools

How we work a large property

  1. We walk it with you. House, outbuildings, wood piles, feed stores and the edge where the bush starts.
  2. We set priorities. The house and the buildings you use come first; the open land is left as it is.
  3. We treat and set stations. Perimeter treatment for scorpions and spiders, baits for ants, lockable stations for rodents.
  4. We suggest a schedule. On big rural plots, regular visits usually do better than waiting for a problem.

The mistake people make here

Stacking firewood, building rubble or old pallets against the house. It's convenient, but it creates a scorpion and spider hotel right next to the walls, with a short walk to the back door. Keep wood piles well away from the house and raised off the ground.

A Sardinia Bay tip

Fit brush strips or rubber seals at the bottom of outside doors, including the garage and kitchen door. Scorpions and many spiders come in at ground level, and a sealed threshold stops most of them without a drop of insecticide.

What does it cost?

It depends on the size of the house, how many outbuildings need treating and how many rodent stations are needed. A house-only perimeter treatment is quicker than a full property with workshops, cottages and stores. Many larger properties go onto a regular schedule. We'll quote after we've walked the plot.

Questions we get asked

Can you clear all the scorpions on my property?

No, and on a rural plot you wouldn't want to. We focus on keeping them out of the house and the buildings you use, which is what actually matters.

How do I tell a dangerous scorpion from a harmless one?

As a rough guide, scorpions with thick tails and small, slender pincers need more caution. Ones with big pincers and thin tails are usually less of a concern. Send us a photo if you're unsure.

Is rodent bait safe with owls and wildlife around?

Bait in lockable stations placed for a reason is far safer than loose poison. We never scatter bait on rural properties.

Do you treat staff cottages and outbuildings?

Yes. We treat cottages, garages, workshops and storerooms along with the main house.

How often should a large plot be treated?

For rodents, regular checks work best. Scorpion and spider perimeter treatments are usually done seasonally, with spring and summer the busiest times.
