The most common Beachview pest call starts the same way: the family arrives for the holidays, opens the house, and finds mouse droppings on the counter, chewed linen in the cupboard or a wasp nest over the front door. The fix is to treat the house properly once, then have it checked before you come back, so the problems are sorted while you're still at home.
Why closed-up houses attract pests
Beachview is a small seaside village west of the city, with holiday and retirement homes surrounded by coastal bush. A house that stands empty for part of the year is quiet, dark and undisturbed. Nobody hears the scratching in the roof, nobody notices the first few droppings, and nothing disturbs a wasp building under the eaves. By the time you're back, a small problem has had months to grow.
Sea air adds damp to cupboards and stored linen, and the bush next door supplies rodents, spiders and insects looking for shelter.
What we usually find
Mice
Mice are the main reason people call us at the start of a holiday. They get in through gaps as small as a pencil, often around pipes, under garage doors and at the eaves, and settle in drawers, under the stove and in the roof. They chew bedding, curtains and wiring, and they leave droppings everywhere they go. For an empty house, lockable bait stations placed inside and out keep working while you're away. Our mouse control across the Bay explains the detail.
Fishmoths in linen and books
Damp, closed cupboards full of spare bedding, holiday reading and board games are perfect for fishmoths. They feed on starch, paper and glue, leaving small holes, yellow marks and scraped surfaces. Treating the cupboards and voids where they hide, and storing linen in sealed containers, sorts it out. See getting rid of fishmoths in stored linen and books.
Cockroaches in the kitchen
A kitchen that's empty for months might seem safe from cockroaches, but leftover crumbs under the stove, a drain that dries out and opens a route from the sewer, or a box of groceries brought from home at the start of a stay can all start an infestation. Gel baits placed before you leave keep working while the house is quiet.
Wasp nests
With nobody around to disturb them, paper wasps build freely under eaves, in the roof of the carport and inside the braai area. Arriving to find a large nest over the door is unpleasant, and dangerous for anyone allergic. We treat nests directly; for nests on the western side of the city, see wasp nest removal around Walmer.
A simple plan for holiday homeowners
- An initial treatment. We inspect the house, roof and garden, treat what's there and fit lockable bait stations for rodents.
- A list of gaps to close. We show you where mice and rats are getting in so your handyman can fix them.
- A pre-arrival check. Before the holiday, we check the stations, look for new activity and remove any new wasp nests, so you walk into a clean house.
- A quick message. If you're not there, we'll let you know what we found and send photos on WhatsApp.
We'll need access arranged, through a neighbour, caretaker or key safe.
What people often get wrong
Leaving out a box of poison before locking up. Mice eat some, die in the walls or under the floor, and the smell is waiting for you when you get back. Poison loose in an empty house is also a hazard for any pet or child who finds it on arrival. Bait belongs in a locked station.
A Beachview tip
Before you leave, pour a jug of water into every floor drain and sink, and put the plug in. Drains that dry out over months open a direct route for cockroaches from the sewer, and a wet trap blocks it. Taking all food out of the house, including pet food and the half-packet of rusks, matters just as much.
What does it cost?
It depends on the size of the house, what's living there and whether you'd like the pre-arrival checks. An initial treatment with rodent stations is the bigger job; the checks after that are shorter visits. If you only find the odd droppings and close the gaps yourself, you may need very little from us, and we'll say so. We'll quote once we've seen the property.

Questions we get asked
Can you treat my holiday home while I'm not there?
Yes. As long as access is arranged through a neighbour, caretaker or key safe, we can treat and check the house and send you photos of what we found.
How long before I arrive should you check the house?
A week or two before is ideal. That leaves time for a follow-up if we find new activity.
Will mice keep coming back to an empty house?
They will if the gaps aren't closed. Stations keep the numbers down, but sealing entry points is what stops new mice moving in.
What should I do before locking up for the season?
Remove all food, store linen in sealed containers, fill drain traps with water and close gaps under doors. It makes a big difference.
Is it safe to sleep in the house straight after treatment?
For normal insect treatments, yes, once treated surfaces are dry. Keep children and pets off them until then.
