Insect control for Westering family homes

Dogs, children, school lunches and a busy kitchen. Family life in Westering gives insects plenty to work with, so treatment has to fit around it.

Ants, one of the insects we treat in Westering

Most insect calls from Westering come from busy family homes, and they usually boil down to four culprits: fleas brought in by pets, ants after the kitchen, cockroaches in the warm corners, and mosquitoes biting the kids at night. All four can be treated without anyone leaving the house, and with a bit of planning, without the dog or the toddler getting near anything they shouldn't.

The Westering setting

Westering is an established family suburb in the west of Port Elizabeth, close to Newton Park. Think proper houses on proper plots, gardens with lawns and a few trees, a dog or two, kids' bikes in the garage and a pool or a jungle gym out the back. It's a comfortable place to live, and from an insect's point of view, a comfortable place to live too.

The Bay's mild, humid climate keeps most household insects active through the year. Flea and mosquito numbers climb in the warm months, ants surge after rain, and cockroaches don't take much of a winter break at all.

Four insects, four different fixes

Fleas

When a family calls about bites around the ankles, fleas are the first suspect. The adult fleas you see on the dog are only a small part of the problem. Eggs, larvae and pupae sit in carpets, dog beds, under furniture and in shady spots of the garden where the pets lie. That's why a flea problem keeps coming back after a single spray. We treat the house and the outside resting areas together, and it works best when the pets are treated by your vet on the same day. Our flea control in Port Elizabeth page explains the life cycle in more detail.

Ants

Ants find sugary snacks, juice spills and pet food bowls fast. In family kitchens they often head straight for the lunchbox cupboard or the dog's bowl by the back door. Spraying the trail only kills the workers you can see and can split the nest. Ant baits, which workers carry back to feed the queen, are what clear a colony. Cockroaches

Small German cockroaches live behind fridges, in the dishwasher housing and around the kettle. Larger American cockroaches come in through drains and from the garden at night. Gel baits in cracks and crevices are ideal in a family home, because they sit out of reach of little hands and paws while the colony feeds on them.

Mosquitoes

Summer nights in a house with young children often means bites on arms and faces in the morning. Mosquitoes breed in very small amounts of still water: a toy left in the garden, a paddling pool, a blocked gutter, a bird bath. We treat the shaded spots where they rest and help you hunt down the breeding sites.

How we treat with kids and pets around

  • We plan the visit with you. Ideally when the kids are at school and the dog can be kept in another part of the property for a couple of hours.
  • We choose the method for the room. Gel baits in kitchens, ant baits along trails, odourless, non-staining residual sprays for fleas and resting insects.
  • We tell you exactly when it's safe. Keep children and pets off treated surfaces until they're dry, which is usually a couple of hours. You don't need to move out.
  • We follow up where the insect needs it. Fleas and German cockroaches both have stages that a single treatment can miss.

The mistake we see most

Using a flea bomb from the shop. The fog settles on the tops of surfaces, but flea larvae live deep in carpet fibres and under furniture, where it never reaches. Families often set off two or three bombs, put up with the smell, and still have fleas. A targeted treatment of the places the pets actually sleep, combined with vet treatment for the animals, does far better.

A tip for Westering homes

Vacuum the dog's favourite spots every day for two weeks after a flea treatment, then throw away the vacuum bag or empty the canister outside. Vibration and warmth make flea pupae hatch, so vacuuming brings them out to meet the treatment rather than leaving them to wait.

What does it cost?

It depends on the size of the house and garden, which insects you're dealing with and how established they are. A single ant trail into the kitchen is a quick visit and sometimes needs nothing more than bait and better food storage. A flea problem in a home with two dogs and a lot of carpet takes more time, and usually a follow-up. We'll quote once we've seen it.

Questions we get asked

Can I stay home with my kids during insect treatment?

Yes. Keep children and pets out of treated rooms and off sprayed surfaces until they're dry, usually about two hours, and then life carries on as normal.

Why do the fleas come back after I treat the dog?

Because most of the flea population lives in the house and garden as eggs, larvae and pupae. The home and the pet need to be treated together.

Is ant bait dangerous if my dog finds it?

We place ant baits where pets can't easily reach them and use only small amounts. Tell us about your pets and we'll plan placements around them.

What attracts mosquitoes into the bedrooms?

Breeding water nearby and open, unscreened windows at dusk. Removing standing water in the garden is the biggest single improvement.

How soon will the ants be gone?

You'll usually see more ants for a day or two as they feed on the bait, then a sharp drop within about a week as the colony dies off.
